14-Year-Old Blogger, Peace Prize Winner Shot by Taliban.

Hey guys. If you watch/read the news, you’ve probably heard about this by now. Malala Yousafzai is a 14yr old Pakistani girl who was shot by the Taliban for simply wanting to go to school. (UPDATE to this story: I’ve read that she’s in a stable condition in hospital)

In 2011 she won Pakistan’s first Peace Prize for her work on promoting rights to education for her fellow women.

This whole situation is terrible, obviously. But women all over the world face this every day. Stuff that we take for granted in a country like Canada, where you are free to pursue any life you choose – it’s a luxury for them.

At the young age of fourteen, she has to fight just to be able to get a secular, non-restricted education. In places like this where religious groups are in control, lack of education is what keeps them there – especially when the populace can’t read or write, therefore, they can’t ask other countries for help. They can’t organize and rebel by themselves. Or so they think, anyway.

Women, even children, have a great influence over their families, including their husbands, even in very restrictive places. This is the kind of influence groups like this want to squash at any cost.

But we cannot let them be crushed, ever. Without dissent, true equality cannot exist.

Dissent tends to fade when education does.

So please, never stop learning. Educate yourself as much as you can about how your country works, whether you live in a first world country, or a third world country.

Education is your biggest weapon against ignorance and oppression  Learn your rights, learn how to fight for others.
