Hey Strangekittens. This is a special post. Specifically, it’s my 100th post!
Firstly, I never thought I’d stick with this as long as I have. It’s been six months since I started Strangekitty and I’ve been busy ever since. Being able to use all my talents, in writing, design, photography, cooking – it makes me stupidly happy.
The ability to show off my geekery, and to share it with others in hope that it will help? Awesome!
I’ve mentioned before, that the logo is based off my disabled cat. You see, he’s got a Feline
Cerebellar Hypoplasia. In short, he walks like a drunk, and always will. He’s not in any pain. But back to my point. The SK logo is based off his weird posture, and to me he embodies a spirit that motivates me. Despite his physical failings, he’s an extremely smart cat. He’s adjusted to it, to the point that we sometimes forget he’s not exactly normal. The fact that despite his life being harder than most, he continues on happily through life, with this passionate curiosity. It sounds silly being inspired by a cat, but there you go.
The comments/reactions I get are what keeps me going, with producing more content for you to enjoy. It took me awhile to get in a nice rhythm for posting but I’m happy with it now.
I started this site because I wanted to have a place for girls like me. The media has made it uncool to be smart, or talented, unless you’re rich. If you’re rich, you can be anything you want. If you’re not, well, you’re a weirdo
Women are not one-dimensional characters; we have lives, loves and interests. We’re smart, and maybe not as smart as we’d like to be. We like lots of different stuff – I love doing my nails, but I also love video games, and ancient history. Why do these things have to be mutually exclusive? For that matter, why is it that there’s only a very narrow perception of what girls should be?
It’s because of this, that I started this. I post fashion, and beauty stuff. A fair amount of ladies like that. But I also post recipes, health, and practical articles. I’m also not afraid to bring up political, possibly controversial issues so that you may be informed. I hope that I’ve encouraged people to try new things, or to be more educated about what affects them.
Altogether, I’m really proud how far the site has come. I didn’t expect traffic to get up to this level so quick, but it’s not like I’m complaining. Of course, i’ll be happier the more I get, haha!
And I can’t forget, without the help of my eternally patient friend Jenny, It would have taken WAY longer to get this going. I’ll be forever thankful for the hours she’s spent talking me through tech stuff and answering my stupid questions.
And my ever-patient husband, who supports my madcap schemes. He understands.
Anyway, I have lots more in store for everyone. The store will be up and running soon, with stickers and some other fun stuff I’m working on. Eventually, I’d like to have a more interactive community aspect to SK, but that’s under wraps. For now, you can sign up and help me get the forums buzzing!
